SOCIAL DECAY'S GUIDE TO LONDON

Posted on

So, Sam and Melissa have already been to London before for trade shows, but my (Ashley) first time was this month! We all love the city—but it's really big and can be totally overwhelming, even for us New Yorkers! There are so many different neighborhoods to explore, each with their own vibe, and there are endless things to do or see...not to mention, a never ending supply of cute boys with hot accents  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here are some of our favorite London things that we 10/10 recommend! (That aren't all the touristy things that you'll already be doing)
Afternoon Tea
You MUST have afternoon tea while in London. We recommend splurging and feeling fancy with the St Pancras hotel's tea. Afterwards, you can check out the steps in the hotel where Spice Girls' "Wannabe" music video was filmed!

Hit All of the Pubs
Brits love their pints. Pubs open early, but don't stay open too late. This is a great excuse to day drink. Check out Hawley Arms in Camden, which has a cute garden and happened to be one of Amy Winehouse's favorite pubs. There's a painting of her looking like a saint outside! For a spot with a view, try Founder's Arms on the South Bank. You can sit outside near the river, or inside and look out through the glass walls. For a unique atmosphere, switch it up and go to Gordon's Wine Bar  which is in a cave.

Explore the Neighborhoods
As I mentioned, all the neighborhoods are sooo different! Camden feels like the London version of the East Village/St Marks area, so it's fun to walk around there. Plus, you can't miss the adorable pastel buildings that are in Notting Hill. Walk around here and check out the Portobello Road Market. Then, if you want an escape from the big city feel, go to the Buckingham Palace Gardens for some nature and fresh air.

Enjoy Some Theatre
London's West End is super prestigious, just like Broadway! You can see a bunch of shows there that are currently on Broadway at a cheaper price. I saw Wicked and would certainly recommend it. You can also snag tickets to Hamilton and Book of Mormon which are basically impossible to score in New York!

Please Your Sweet Tooth
English candy is THE BEST! You can find it in New York, but it's much more expensive since it's imported. Seriously, just forget about your diet. So here's a list of the best candy ever that you need to try: Flake bars (my absolute favorite), Mars BarsAero, Fizzy Cola Straws, and classic Cadbury Dairy Milk bars

Get Tattooed
London has sooo many tattoo shops and a really cool tattoo culture. I got a teacup tattoo  in honor of my English family at Love Hate Social Club  which had super talented artists. Another crowd pleaser is Frith Street Tattoo in Soho.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. It would take forever to explore London and find all the great hidden gems. Let us know in the comments what your favorite London spots are X
