RETRO STYLE ICON: JOAN JETT
Imagine living a life of rock n roll, entering the music scene at 15 years old, and still rocking at age 57. Recently inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, Joan Jett is dubbed the Godmother of Punk. Her fame began with the all-girl band, The Runaways. She went different directions after the band broke up, continuing to succeed and break barriers. She went solo and then on to front Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Through the years, she made her mark on music with her stage presence and her tough, raspy voice, even though the punk rock scene was very much dominated by men. She represents what it meant to be a powerful woman killing it in her industry and in the world.
Her signature jet black hair (spoiler alert: her real last name is not Jett) and tough-girl style made her a recognizable icon in the fashion world. During the height of her musical career, her staples included band tees, tight jeans, layers upon layers of necklaces, stacks of bracelets, and black eyeliner. Obviously, you can't forget leather jackets... and lots of leather all around. She was always repping another punk band, wearing Ramones or Sex Pistols tees. Safety pins were also accessories of choice, for style (hanging from necklaces) and for functionality (like for visibly holding your zipper fly closed). Of course, on top of all this, she rocked (and continues to rock) a bad bitch mentality. Joan was gonna do what Joan wanted to do. She may not have given a damn about her bad reputation, her style has left a lasting impact on the fashion world for bad bitches everywhere.
